Don vs. The Volcano

Yesterday Today with your host, me.

I planned on daily updates but I was pretty tired once I got back to the hotel. Wifi in the hotel bar- nope. So I had a beer and that was it. So here’s yesterday’s update.

Here is the Wikipedia entry for Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula, 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Reykjavík. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fagradalsfjall

I’m going to pick a few of 145 images I shot. Here’s the caveat. We did not make it to the volcano itself yesterday as the top of the mountain was shrouded in fog. We did hike along the Northwestern lava field. If you stood still you could here gas escaping and cracking and shifting under the cooled lava. The hike was a challenge, but good footwear and the voices in my head kept me going.

Everyone remember where we parked.

Conditions further up the trail.
Spock! The. Valley. It’s full of…. lava.
Canadian included for scale.
Do you smell the sulfur?
It’s not recommended that you walk on the lava. It can be very thin in places, and there is molten lava under the cool stuff. Don’t worry, mom got her daughter back in one piece.

I swear we parked here somewhere.

So that was the journey. Probably about 4hrs out and back. Don’t worry-

  • Don McGrain on I always pad my travel times in case of delays etc. I gave myself 3 hrs to get from Union Station in DC to the airport. One hour has already been burned up by Amtrak running an hour late. I also just discovered that the Metro in DC doesn’t go to the airport? Last leg is by bus. Starting to think I’ll be lucky to make the flight.
